I like Scorsese’s movie because of the way it deals with the Lincoln myth. He basically became a dictator to ‘save the union’ which mean maintaining his ability to tax the southern states which were seeking the same independence the colonies had sought 80 years before.

Cops were a new thing at this time. Many to most cities didn’t have them at all especially in the early 19th century and before. They brought in ‘the police’ who work for the city govt. and basically put a lot of elected county sheriffs out of ‘law enforcement’ for a reason.

I asked a woman from the New York area if they even have a county govt. up there. She didn’t know. They do.

For most of our history cops were probably low paid and were basically thugs with sticks, badges and the authority to kill you and get away with it, kinda like now. If the modern ones were about anything but a paycheck and a retirement plan they’d be arresting the garbage they work for. And they ain’t us.

They don’t need the low level thieves anymore. The drug war lets them take cash and assets under suspicion only. The drug war like the war on terror continues because the right assholes on all sides profit from it.
