Trade Promotion Authority Imperils American Independence

On April 16, a new Trade Promotion Authority bill was unveiled by the Senate Finance Committee and House Ways and Means Committee. These committees are expected to expedite this bill and report it out for a vote in the full House and Senate in the next few weeks. Votes on the bill could be delayed if there aren’t sufficient votes for passage.

President Obama had asked Congress for “fast-track” Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) so that he can finish negotiating and sign two trade “partnership” agreements, one with eleven Pacific Rim nations known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and another with the European Union known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

We consider the introduction of the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill to be a very big deal. Arguably the biggest threat to the continued existence of the United States as an independent nation under the Constitution is the Obama administration’s current initiative to negotiate and get congressional approval of the TPP and TTIP agreements. These agreements would put our nation on the path to political integration with the other nations involved in these negotiations and are being promoted by the same organizations that destroyed the independence of 28 European nations with the creation of the European Union.

And, since virtually everyone believes that the TPP and TTIP deals cannot be approved by Congress without a TPA bill in place, we must prevent congressional approval of TPA. We’re asking our members and all supporters of our national independence to phone their representative and senators now in strong opposition to the TPA bill.

Automakers to gearheads: Stop repairing cars

But exemptions from the DMCA don’t give third parties the right to infringe upon existing copyrights. Nor does an exemption mean consumers don’t have to abide by other laws and rules that govern vehicles passed by the National Highway Traffic Administration, Environmental Protection Agency or U.S. Patent and Trade Office.

“It’s not a new thing to be able to repair and modify cars,” said Kit Walsh, a staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “It’s actually a new thing to keep people from doing it. There are these specialized agencies that govern what vehicles can lawfully be used for on the road, and they have not seen fit to stop them from repairing cars.”

Aftermarket suppliers and home enthusiasts have been modifying ECUs for years without dire consequences. By tweaking the ECU codes, a process sometimes known as “chipping,” they’ve boosted horsepower, improved fuel efficiency, established performance limits for teen drivers and enhanced countless other features. These innovations have contributed to a “decades-old tradition of mechanical curiosity and self-reliance,” according to the EFF.

Those innovations could be curbed precisely at a time that automakers believe personalization of vehicles is emerging as a significant trend. Software is allowing for all sorts of technology, such as 4G LTE wireless connections, and motorists can use this software to choose from an increasing array of infotainment options. But the car companies, paradoxically, want to be the ones doing the personalizing.

The EFF thinks the industry’s desire to block exemptions has more to do with profits than safety. As software becomes easier to update, automakers could sell these performance upgrades on an a la carte basis. Because a favorable ruling would strengthen their control of the software, the car companies could potentially force consumers to only have their vehicles fixed at their dealerships or preferred repair shops.

Take into consideration, also, that, if Democrats retain the White House, Lynch will almost certainly be nominated to replace Anthony Kennedy or Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. And, if Republicans believe they are experiencing pain now, wait till the “swing vote” for the entire federal judiciary is on the line.

So the GOP is now in the unique position of choosing how miserable it wants to be. When you feed a test animal, you get more of the same behavior. And confirming Lynch will be the ultimate reward for the Democrats’ loathsome campaign.

Facebook Tracks Users Without Consent, but Users Can Take Control

Facebook has spent years earning a notorious reputation for sacrificing users’ privacy for increased advertising revenue. Now the social networking giant may be in serious legal trouble with the European Union for violating EU laws about tracking Internet users without their consent.

A report issued by ICRI/CIR and iMinds-SMIT for the Belgian Privacy Commission claims that Facebook is tracking Internet users — even those who are not logged into a Facebook account — and capturing their browsing habits across the web. In many cases, the tracking involves users who do not even have a Facebook account.

The method by which Facebook tracks users is the ubiquitous “Like” button found on most websites. Sites that have the button must allow certain computer scripts to run. These scripts allow Facebook to see what websites users visit even if the users do not click the button. Facebook then uses that information to allow advertisers to direct their ads to targeted users. The practice is controversial in the United States and illegal in the European Union. The issue at stake is that if users agree to have their browsing habits tracked across the Web, it is a valuable service; if they do not, it is an invasion of their privacy. The “Like” button simply appearing on a website does not amount to a user’s consent.

To make matters worse, Facebook also ignores “Do Not Track” requests from users who activate that setting in browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. In doing so, Facebook joins ranks with Google and Yahoo as well as a slew of disreputable sites.

Martial Law? Obama Confiscates National Guard Helicopters From All 50 States

In all, the Defense Department will confiscate 192 Apaches from National Guard units around the country and give them to the active duty Army.

In exchange for the heavily armed and highly maneuverable choppers, Guard units will receive 111 UH-60 Blackhawk transport helicopters from the Army, Defense One reports.

Last week, U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee, claiming that the measure will save taxpayers $12 billion, over the next three years.

New Hampshire Activists Launch Two New Initiatives on April 19

On April 19, in the City of Nashua, New Hampshire, the live-free-or-die state, there is going to be a loud bang very much like the shot heard around the world made on April 19, 1775 in Massachusetts.

Well-known Conservative activists and like-minded constitutionalists in New Hampshire and surrounding states will launch their new initiative, the 603 Alliance for the purpose of impacting the outcome of the New Hampshire First-in-the-National Primary election.

These activists realize from past elections that splitting their votes among numerous conservative candidates enables the moderate establishment to cruise to victory, and that only a consolidating effort on their parts will result in a victory for a conservative candidate.
