Our conversation began with a discussion of how yet another public attacker, Vester Lee Flanagan, demonstrated the impotency of background checks by passing one to acquire the gun he used to shoot and kill Alison Parker and Adam Ward in Virginia.
Pratt responded by pointing out that public attackers are not the only ones background checks fail to stop. He said, “During the last year of record, although the government has done millions upon million of background checks, they brought 14 prosecutions to court for trial–hardly a crime-fighting tool.” He said some people respond to this by pointing out that there were people who were “denied getting a gun at the point of sale,” but these people fail to note that criminals get guns in ways that completely circumvent the checks.
Pratt said:
Many mass murders have gotten their hands on guns by passing a background check, while other criminals are resourceful. They are evil, but they are resourceful, as well, and they get their hands on guns. The idea that somehow we’re safe if we do a background check is simply not true.
FK – I have to disagree with Mr. Pratt on who the ‘evil’ ones are. Most shooters as most criminals are probably suffering from some form of mental illness. It’s the highly educated intelligent authoritarians who seek to disarm us all who are evil, for they fully understand what they do.

Anti-gun Senators Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey just announced they want to bring back their toxic legislation stripping Americans of their gun rights without due process of law.
And the President is ready to sign this gun ban into law.
You may recall our battle against the Manchin-Toomey language in 2013. Their legislation sought to BAN many private sales of firearms, forcing countless gun buyers to run to a dealer and submit to a background check before making their purchase.
Thankfully, Senators Toomey and Manchin failed because Gun Owners of America and its members got in their way. According to the New York Times, and other liberal media outlets, GOA was able to put enough heat on the Senate to defeat this pernicious legislation.

H.R. 2753, or “The Fairness in Firearms Testing Act,” would require the ATF to make a videotape of any guns they test and to make those recordings available to everyone.
Rep. Hice — an A+ rated freshman who was strongly supported by Gun Owners of America in his initial bid for Congress — wants to protect gun owners from official harassment. His bill would require the ATF to visually document (via recordings) any of its gun testings. This is extremely important, given their controversial decisions where they’ve classified semiautomatics as full automatics.
Gun Owners of America has worked with law-abiding Americans who have been victimized by ATF’s “secret tests.” And we are disgusted by the bureau’s refusal to release testing information which does not comport the results ATF desires.
The Obama administration claims to value transparency. But ATF has been less than transparent when it comes to testing that affects the livelihood of thousands, the constitutional rights of millions, and the potential criminal liability of many.

Several Republican Representatives in the House went to bat for gun owners this week and have successfully added good amendments to a “must pass” appropriations bill.
A “must pass” bill refers to a legislative funding bill that Obama is 99.9% certain to sign, given that he won’t shut down huge parts of the government for relatively minor add-on amendments.
